Turkeys... an interesting bird.

Turkeys... an interesting bird.

The Twisted Cedar seems to have a running relationship with this big bird! Let me explain. Early this Spring Brad & I were sitting on the front porch with our son enjoying the early evening and each other. Then we heard the 'the sound'. One by one we became silent as we each were attempting to recognize that noise. TURKEY! Yes, definitely TURKEY! We all laughed realizing we were hearing the birds across Highway 13 at the Osborne Nature Center. It was as though they were joining our conversation with their 'gobble gobbles'!

I love going behind the house to the overlook! Morning time is my favorite time. It's so peaceful! A wonderful spot to meditate, practice QiGong or to simply Be. About the only thing you hear are the various birds singing and your own thoughts. The Volga River is quiet from this vantage point as it gently meanders past. One morning I went down there earlier than usual, stepped onto the deck and BAM! Out flew 2 turkeys directly below me! What an exciting surprise! They flew to safety (like I'd ever hurt them!) across the river. They took my breath away and left me with a huge smile!

Brad had the next solo experience a few days later. As he was walking along the bluff he surprised 3 out of the brush! They strutted away in front of him, making sure they stayed out of his reach! Isn't nature grand!

I love those little aha moments. You know, those subtle gifts given when we least expect. When all you can see are the jobs on your list for that day. I experienced one of those special moments this morning. I was hanging curtains in the Studio (you've not seen the Studio yet!) when I looked out and saw a beautiful Tom TURKEY walk right across the backyard! I couldn't believe my eyes! But yep, it was a turkey all right! I grabbed my phone to take a picture and quietly stepped outside as by this time he couldn't be seen from the house. Turkey's are smart and very aware! As I took a step, he flew through the trees and over the bank making the most glorious sound!

I wonder how many times I’ve missed seeing him before. All I had to do was look up and notice what was right in front of me. Note to self; the ‘to-do list’ isn’t as important as noticing those special gifts.

I regret not getting the picture, but I discovered it’s really challenging to focus when your jaw is hanging open in awe. Maybe next time!

God is so good.
